Chemistry Ranks Top 3 Nationally

Congratulations to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry! According to the 2011 publication by the Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Jackson State University ranks 3rd in Bachelors, 2nd in Master’s, and 4th in Doctoral degrees in Physical Sciences awarded to African Americans in the country.   Physical Sciences include disciplines such as Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics and interdisciplinary Materials Science.  JSU awards both chemistry and physics bachelor degrees, but only awards chemistry degrees on the Master’s and Doctoral levels.   These high rankings are a testimony to the quality of the chemistry programs and the effort of the faculty to nurture our students.  We believe that the high caliber of faculty, top nationally ranked research productivity, and excellent education and research programs are some of the key factors for the success.
	Dr. Ray and team awarded $3 million for JSU-UCSB Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM)
	JSU will offer radiochemistry program through funding from Nuclear Regulatory Commission
	Mississippi Academy of Science awards JSU professor Outstanding Scientific Division Chair
	Dr. Ashton Hamme received $1 million awards from NSF
The Departmental Chair, Dr. Hongtau Yu was awarded the “Stanley C. Israel Regional Award” from the American Chemical Society in 2011.
Three Chemistry faculty have been recognized as National Academy of Inventors
Two Nobel Laureates to visit JSU for 20th annual international computational chemistry conference - Oct. 27-29
