    Short Course: Nanostructure Engineering
        - A Route to Discovery and Innovation REU participants will take a specially-designed 4-hour short course in Nanomaterials Science taught by Dr. Ray: "Nanostructure Engineering - A Route to Discovery and Innovation". The course content includes: (1) Diversity of nanoparticle sizes, shapes, and chemical composition with structural control at the nanoscale. (2) How nanomaterial based technology is related to daily life; (3) Current trends in science and technology based on nanomaterial and their impact on industry.
Workshop on oral and written communication
A 2-hour lecture on oral and scientific writing lecture will be given and participants will practice oral scientific communication through presentations later. The interns will also work on written scientific communication skills through a guided writing and peer-review exercise. Both the oral presentation and the written report will be prepared and given at the end of the 10-week program.
    Seminar series
We will design a weekly summer seminar series to introduce students to the breath of research in Materials Science. Selected speakers will represent a diversity of career path in academia and industry at various career stages from graduate students to world-renown scientists. Seminar speakers will include scientists from academia, industry and government labs.
    Research presentations
In the 2nd week, students will present their proposed research project/hypothesis to the other REU students and faculty mentors.
    Social events
To build a sense of community among participants, several technical and social activities will be conducted each summer. Some activities will be unique to our REU program, such as a trip to the local Nissan Plant. Other activities will take place during the bi-weekly dinners and one social event with different cultural activities.
    Career workshops
All participants will attend workshops on research ethics, the graduate school application process, graduate studies, GRE preparation, and resume preparation.
