The Department of Chemistry at
Jackson State University emerged from
the Division of General Science in 1958, but remained in the School of
Liberal Studies until 1983. The first B.S. Degree was awarded in 1961. The
B.S. Degree program was developed
to meet the increased interest in the scientific growth of the nation by
preparing African Americans for entry level positions in teaching or
research. In 1973, the Department began offering the
Master of Science degree for persons
interested in research or teaching. The chemistry program became
accredited in 1975 by the American Chemical Society Committee on
Professional Training. In 1978, the Department of Chemistry physically
moved the from E. E. Just Hall of Science to the John A. Peoples, Jr.,
Science Building.
In
1983, the Department of Chemistry was removed from the School of Liberal
Studies as the University modified its organizational structure. It
retains its departmental status and currently resides in the
College of Science, Engineering, and Technology.
The Department of Chemistry remains nationally accredited by the American
Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training. In the Spring of
1996, the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning
approved the Ph.D. program in
chemistry. In the Fall of 1999, the Department started admitting students
into the Ph.D. program.
Currently, the department has 22 graduate students and 16 full time
faculty members. |
