Southern
School on Computational Chemistry and Materials Science (April 25-26,
2008)
8th Southern School on
Computational Chemistry and Materials Science organized by members of the
NSF-EPSCOR, NSF-PREM, and NSF-CREST Computational Center for Molecular
Structure and Interactions.
235th
ACS Annual Meeting: Research and Education in Materials, April 6-10, 2008, New Orleans, LA
Chemistry
Assistant Professor, Dr. Paresh C. Ray, was invited to organize a session on "Research and Education
in Materials" at the 235th American Chemical Society Meeting
in New Orleans, LA. Co-organizers are Professor Craig Hawker, University of California
Santa Barbara, and Professor Marek
Urban, University
of Southern Mississippi.
There will be four scientific and
education sessions with 36 oral presentations and one poster session. There
will be about 40 JSU faculty, students, and staff attending this conference
that is usually attended by near 20,000 scientists worldwide.
40th ACS Southeastern
Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC), April 4, 2008, Clinton, MS
This year the 40th Annual ACS Southeastern
Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) will be held on the campus of
Mississippi College (MC) in Clinton,
Mississippi, on Friday, April
4th, 2008. Co-hosts this year are the
Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at MC, the Department of Chemistry
at Millsaps
College, and the Department of
Chemistry at Jackson
State University. Note that this conference has been
scheduled two days before the National ACS meeting in New Orleans in the hope
that some will be able to stop off in Clinton (just west of Jackson, MS on I-20)
on their way to New Orleans.
Chemistry
Faculty publishes 6.4 peer-reviewed papers per faculty per year
The total number of peer-reviewed publications for the Chemistry
Department has reached an average of over 100 per year in the last two years
(2005, and 2006), based on the 2007 Directory of Graduate Research published
by the American Chemical Society. Actually, chemistry faculty again published
over 100 peer-reviewed papers in 2007 based on our internal count. When this number is averaged by its 18 faculty
members listed in the Directory, an impressive number of 6.4 in obtained.
This number compares very well with the best chemistry departments in
country. For example, the top chemistry departments in the Southern United
States such as the University of Florida, The University of Texas at Austin, the Georgia Institute of Technology, or Vanderbilt University produce similar numbers
based on the recent report from the American Chemical Society's Directory of
Graduate Research. An average chemistry department in the nation produces
about 2-3 publications per faculty per year. This achievement is a testament
of the dedication of the chemistry faculty, staff and students for
cutting-edge scientific research and the strong support from the JSU
administration.
Nobel
Laureate Seminar Series, November 2, 2007
We are excited about starting a Nobel Laureate
Seminar Series. We hope to use the expertise, the state-of-the-art
science, and the personal experiences of the Nobel Laureates to encourage all
of us as faculty and our students to pursue excellence in scientific research
and education. We plan to invite one Nobel Laureates per year in the future
to give one seminar to the general scientific community in the metro Jackson area and one chemistry talk specific to faculty
and students at Jackson
State University.
You and your students and colleagues are cordially invited for this year's
Nobel Laureate Seminar Series by Dr. Robert Curl from Rice University.
Dr. Curl was one of the three scientists for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in
1996 for their discovery and research on the Fullerenes - Buckyballs.
Since then, the research and education on carbon-related science, carbon nanotubes, has taken off to another level. Please come
and enjoy the presentation by Dr. Curl!
International
Symposium on Nanomaterials
International Symposium on Nanomaterials
was held in Richards Bay, South Africa, July 29 - August 1, 2007. The
conference was co-organized by JSU-PREM (PI: Paresh C. Ray), UCSB-ICMR, and
the University of Zululand in South Africa. The four day event
was attended by 120 attendees from South Africa,
Nigeria, Tanzania, the United
Kingdom, and the USA. The JSU team included 11
members from the Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Civil and Environmental
Engineering departments.
Congratulations
to the 2006-2007 Chemistry Graduates!!!
The Department faculty and staff congratulate the five doctoral
graduates! In the eight year history of the PhD program, it is the first time
we have 5 graduates. Congratulations to the Hughes family for the
outstanding achievements of the twins, sister Shantelle
and brother Shawntae Hughes!
Congratulations to the 15 BS graduates, 10 with honors!
Congratulations to those who were awarded as best students in their categories!

Chemistry Day (April 30, 2007)
The Annual Chemistry Day will be held on Monday, April 30, 2007 in
the JSU eCenter. We will come together to celebrate
the achievements of the faculty, staff and students of the Department. All
chemistry students (majors), faculty, and staff are invited to attend.
Special guests from the JSU administration, alumni and friends of the Chemistry
Department are also invited. The event will start at 5 PM with poster
presentations from chemistry students followed with the Award Ceremony and
Banquet dinner at 6 PM. We will celebrate the graduation of four Doctoral,
four Master's, and twelve Bachelor's students for this academic year.
Chemistry
Faculty's publication featured by the journal "Nanotechnology"
Paresh C. Ray,
assistant professor of chemistry, along with graduate students Angela
Fortner, Jelani Griffin, Gopola Darbha, in
collaboration with scientists from the Mississippi State University, has
published an article "Gold nanotube based
miniaturized laser induced fluorescence probe for specific DNA hybridization
detection: studies on size dependent optical properties" in the
Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing journal, Nanotechnology.
The
paper will also be featured in the July 14th print version of
Nanotechnology.
Congratulations, Dr. Ray, for your pioneering work!
